JUSTICE MINISTRY LAWYERS’ ROBE ALLOWANCE RISES TO ₦1M

The Federal Government has increased the annual robe allowance for state counsel and legal officers in the Federal Ministry of Justice and the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria from the previously reported ₦300,000 to ₦1 million.

The increase represents a 233 per cent rise in the allowance approved for eligible lawyers working in the affected institutions.

A circular titled “Review of Robe Allowance for State Counsel and Legal Officers in the Federal Public Service” stated that the government had approved the review of the allowance.

Under the new arrangement, state counsel and legal officers employed by the Federal Ministry of Justice and the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria will receive ₦1 million annually.

The government also approved an annual allowance of ₦600,000 for lawyers serving as legal officers in other ministries, departments, and agencies who perform strictly legal functions.

The revised allowance is intended to cover the professional robe-related requirements associated with the duties of eligible government lawyers.

The adjustment affects legal officers across the federal public service, with different allowance levels depending on their institutions and roles.

The development comes amid broader reviews of allowances and working conditions for public servants as the Federal Government continues to adjust remuneration and benefits across various sectors.

The revised rates are expected to provide additional support for lawyers required to maintain professional courtroom attire while carrying out their official responsibilities.
