June 12: "let’s Keep Defending Democracy", Dafinone Urges Nigerians

As Nigeria celebrates Democracy Day, Senator Ede Dafinone (Delta Central) has urged Nigerians to stay committed to democratic values, stressing that though the country still has a long way to go, it has made meaningful progress since the historic June 12, 1993 elections.

In a heartfelt message to mark the occasion, Dafinone paid tribute to the sacrifices of pro-democracy heroes who paved the way for the freedom Nigerians enjoy today. He emphasized that despite its flaws, democracy remains the best system of government.

“The worst form of democracy is still better than the best military rule,” Dafinone stated. “Our voices, our votes, and our freedoms must be protected with unity and purpose.”

A Call for Unity and Purpose

He called on all Nigerians — especially his constituents in Delta Central and members of the Urhobo Nation — to renew their commitment to building a just, equitable, and inclusive Nigeria.

“Together, we can create the Nigeria we all desire,” he said.

Reflecting on the journey since June 12, 1993 — widely regarded as Nigeria’s most credible election — the Senator noted that the nation has witnessed gains in democratic governance, stronger institutions, and increased citizen participation.

But he also acknowledged the challenges that still exist — from insecurity to economic hardship — calling on Nigerians not to lose faith in democracy as a vehicle for positive change.

Keeping the Spirit of June 12 Alive

“As we mark another June 12, I join millions of Nigerians in reflecting on our democracy — a journey born out of the courage and resilience of patriots,” he said.
“While we are not yet where we should be, we’ve come a long way. The democratic spirit is alive, and it is our duty to nurture it.”

Dafinone urged citizens to stay engaged, hold leaders accountable, and protect democratic freedoms at all costs.

“Democracy offers hope — the promise of justice, inclusion, and prosperity — but only when we all play our part as responsible citizens.”

To his people in Delta and across the Urhobo Nation, he sent a special message:

“Let’s keep faith with Nigeria. Let’s focus on the bigger picture — a country where every region can thrive, and every citizen matters. Our strength is in our diversity.”

Reaffirming the Democratic Vision

As the nation looks ahead, Dafinone’s message is clear: defending democracy is a shared responsibility. Whether through civic participation, peaceful advocacy, or community engagement, every Nigerian has a role to play.

“Let’s recommit to the ideals that make democracy meaningful — participation, justice, accountability, and the rule of law,” he concluded.
