PDP chieftain and former presidential spokesperson clarifies political convictions amid public debate, reaffirming commitment to national unity, democratic ideals, and power-rotation frameworks

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and former spokesperson to Atiku Abubakar, Otunba Segun Showunmi, has stated that the events surrounding the June 12, 1993 presidential election and the subsequent death of Chief M.K.O. Abiola profoundly shaped his political convictions and enduring belief in Nigeria’s democratic development.

Clarifying his position following recent political debates and public criticism regarding his historical references, Showunmi emphasized that the sacrifices made by Abiola and the pro-democracy struggle left an indelible mark on his personal and political journey, redirecting the course of his life toward national service.

The Ogun State politician urged public commentators and political actors not to mistake his measured restraint for an ignorance of democratic history or a lack of personal conviction, maintaining that no individual should seek to diminish or distort Abiola's legacy for short-term political gain.

In his statement, Showunmi reiterated the necessity of adhering to constitutional order, legal restraint, and predictable power-rotation arrangements to reduce inter-ethnic suspicion, preserve national cohesion, and sustain stability across the country's democratic landscape.

Reaffirming his commitment to a pan-Nigerian agenda, Showunmi declared that his ultimate loyalty remains with the Nigerian nation and the advancement of democratic governance, noting that he would, in due course, speak more comprehensively on his personal contributions to the pro-democracy movement.
