JOURNALIST AZUKA OGUJIUBA: HOW POLICE LOCKED ME UP 3 DAYS FOR POSTING COURT INJUNCTION

Journalist and founder of Media Room Hub, Azuka Ogujiuba, has shared a shocking account of how she was detained for three days by officers attached to the office of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) over a post she made on Instagram.

Narrating her ordeal to newsmen, Ogujiuba said her arrest stemmed from a petition filed against her by one Adewale Oladapo, accusing her of cyberbullying and defamation. The alleged offense, she explained, was nothing more than reposting a court injunction on her Instagram page.

“I told them what I published was not cyberbullying. It was a court-approved injunction, and I wasn’t even the only one who published it—about 20 media houses did too,” she said.

Ogujiuba recounted that after honoring a police invitation on August 6, she was later tracked down by two officers—Moses Jolugbo and Ifeoma Ogoli—who allegedly manhandled her in public. “They chased me like a criminal, seized my phone, and dragged me away. Even the person I was interviewing thought they were kidnappers,” she recalled.

According to her, the officers accused her of refusing to take down the publication. She said she was then detained for three days without food, denied access to her lawyer and family, and threatened at gunpoint.

“I was traumatised. I couldn’t sleep. I know the IGP is not aware this is happening in his office. Misused authority was used on me, and it gives the police a bad name,” she said.

Ogujiuba’s revelation adds to growing concerns about the harassment of journalists in Nigeria and the misuse of police powers against members of the press.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
