JONATHAN SAYS 2027 ELECTION WILL TEST NIGERIA’S DEMOCRACY
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said the 2027 general election will be an important test of Nigeria’s democratic maturity.
Jonathan made the statement in his Independence Day message to Nigerians on Thursday, as the country marked 66 years of independence.
The former President urged Nigerians to remain patriotic and committed to national unity as preparations for the 2027 election gather momentum.
He called on citizens to prioritise peace, unity and justice during the coming electoral season.
Jonathan said Nigeria had faced many challenges since gaining independence but had continued to move forward because of the resilience of its people.
He urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and united while working towards a better future.
The former President also said Nigeria had significant opportunities ahead if the country could properly harness its diversity as well as its natural and human resources for sustainable development.
He particularly encouraged young Nigerians to remain hopeful and courageous as they work towards building a country that can provide a prosperous future for future generations.
Jonathan, however, said achieving this would require greater responsibility from leaders at all levels.
He urged political and public leaders to show deeper patriotism and address Nigeria’s social and economic challenges through personal sacrifice, good governance, accountability and respect for the rule of law.
He also called on Nigerians to remain committed to national service and work together to build a peaceful, secure and equitable country.
