JONATHAN MOURNS BUHARI: “HE WAS COURAGEOUS, SELFLESS, AND DEEPLY PATRIOTIC”
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a courageous, selfless, and patriotic leader who left a lasting mark on Nigeria.
Jonathan shared his thoughts in a condolence message released on Sunday by his media aide, Okechukwu Eze, following the news of Buhari’s passing earlier that day in London at the age of 82.
Speaking with deep emotion, Jonathan said he received the news with “a heavy heart and profound sense of national loss.” He praised Buhari as a notable leader, elder statesman, and patriot who served Nigeria both as a military head of state and later as a democratically elected president.
“He will be remembered as a courageous leader, a disciplined officer, and a committed public servant who made considerable contributions towards the peace and progress of our dear nation,” Jonathan said.
Jonathan highlighted Buhari’s reputation for honesty, discipline, and decency — qualities that earned him admiration from Nigerians across all walks of life.
“As a leader, he was selfless, committed to duty, and served the country with character and a deep sense of patriotism,” he added.
Reflecting personally on their relationship, Jonathan described Buhari as a respected colleague and elder.
“In his passing, Nigeria has lost one of its foremost leaders, and I have lost a respected colleague and elder. His legacy will continue to endure in the hearts of all who value sacrifice, integrity, perseverance, and devotion to national ethos.”
On behalf of his family and the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, he extended his condolences to Buhari’s immediate family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians mourning what he called “this great loss.”
Jonathan concluded his message with prayers, asking Almighty Allah to forgive Buhari’s shortcomings, accept his good deeds, and grant him a place in Jannatul Firdaus.
As tributes pour in from across the country and beyond, many Nigerians are reflecting on Buhari’s decades of service and the values he championed throughout his life.
