JAMB DENIES SCRAPPING UTME, SAYS EXAM STILL MANDATORY FOR ADMISSION INTO NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has dismissed reports claiming that the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is no longer required for admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
In a statement released on Thursday, October 16, 2025, and signed by the board’s Director of Public Affairs and Protocol, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, JAMB described the circulating report as false, malicious, and misleading.
According to the statement, the claim — published by Phonix.browser.com — falsely attributed to the Minister of Education, Dr. Mauruf Alausa, an announcement that JAMB had been removed as a prerequisite for admission.
“We wish to categorically state that the information is malicious and preposterous, as Hon. Minister of Education, Dr. Mauruf Alausa, has at no point made such a pronouncement,” Dr. Benjamin stated.
He clarified that the government’s “Renewed Hope in Action” agenda, which was quoted in the fake report, only focuses on expanding access to tertiary education, not eliminating JAMB’s role in the admission process.
JAMB therefore urged the public to disregard the unfounded publication, reaffirming that it will continue to perform its statutory duties in accordance with existing laws.
“The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board shall continue to discharge its statutory duties in line with its enabling laws,” the statement concluded.
