Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has vowed that the team will give their all to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stressing that missing another edition would be a major disappointment for Nigeria.

The three-time African champions failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, a heartbreak that still lingers among fans and players alike.

Speaking ahead of Nigeria’s crucial playoff clash against Gabon, Iwobi told Sporty TV that the players are fully aware of the expectations on their shoulders.

“Hopefully we win and get the result we want because the World Cup is the biggest competition and it would be a shame if Nigeria don’t go,” he said.

“It’s only right that we give our best and show Nigerians that we are ready to be there.”

The 2026 World Cup will be co-hosted by Mexico, Canada, and the United States, with Africa expected to field nine representatives following FIFA’s expanded format.

Iwobi, who will be making his 90th appearance for the Super Eagles, added that the team is focused on making up for past disappointments and bringing joy back to Nigerian football fans.

The Super Eagles face Gabon tonight as they look to take another step closer to securing their ticket to the global showpiece.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
