IWOBI: SUPER EAGLES MUST STOP AUBAMEYANG IN WCQ PLAYOFF VS GABON
Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff against Gabon, Alex Iwobi has stressed the need for the Super Eagles to neutralize star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The 36-year-old Gabon forward has been in fine form during the qualifiers, scoring seven goals in nine appearances for the Panthers. Now, he will lead the line for coach Thierry Mouyouma’s side in the first semi-final of the playoffs on Thursday.
“He’s getting on, but you wouldn’t think that. He’s a youthful guy,” Iwobi told BBC Sport, adding: “I don’t know how we’re going to lock him up.”
Iwobi emphasized that containing Aubameyang will be key to Nigeria’s chances of progressing to the next stage of the World Cup qualifiers. The Super Eagles are preparing to implement a strategic approach to neutralize the threat posed by Gabon’s talisman.
