Victor Boniface Speaks From the Heart: “It Hasn’t Been Easy, But I’m Grateful”

Nigerian striker Victor Boniface has opened up about his mixed fortunes with the Super Eagles, admitting that while things haven’t gone as he hoped on the international stage, he remains thankful for the opportunity to represent his country.

In a recent interview with sports journalist Oma Akatugba, the Bayer Leverkusen forward—currently on loan at Werder Bremen—reflected on his national team journey, acknowledging that goals have been hard to come by.

“I have been unlucky with the national team in terms of scoring goals, even though there were a couple of games I was not good,” Boniface said. “My biggest dream as a football player was to represent my country, and I achieved that. Because it has not worked out well for me doesn’t mean I’m a bad player.”

Boniface emphasized that his love and commitment to the Super Eagles have never been in doubt. Despite criticism from some fans, he believes that a few quiet games shouldn’t define his ability or his contribution to Nigerian football.

On his club career, Boniface also addressed the buzz surrounding his near transfer to AC Milan, saying he has no regrets about how things turned out.

“When the Milan deal didn’t go through, I was just relaxing with my friends. Things like that happen in football all the time,” he said. “I love Germany. I really do.”

The striker, who missed a large part of last season due to injury, dismissed suggestions that his performance was disappointing.

“I missed a lot of games but still scored eight goals. I don’t understand how that became a bad season,” he stated confidently.

Boniface’s story is one of resilience and gratitude. Having endured serious injuries earlier in his career, he said he remains thankful just to be playing football at the highest level.

“I came from humble beginnings. I’ve faced tough injuries that could have ended my career, so every day I’m thankful to God. Being here is already a blessing,” he added.

He also addressed criticism over his social media posts, saying people often read too much into harmless fun.

“I just post funny things. If people make it into a big issue, that’s their choice. When I stopped posting, they said I must be going through something. When I post, they still complain,” he said with a laugh.

Now settled in Germany, Boniface says he feels at home both on and off the pitch and is determined to give his best for Werder Bremen.

“We have a good connection here. It feels like home. I had offers from other countries, even from England, but I chose to stay in Germany. I love it here and I want to make the fans proud.”

Despite the ups and downs, Boniface’s passion for football—and his country—remains unshaken. For him, the journey is far from over, and the best is yet to come.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
