‘IT’S FOOTBALL, NOT WAR’ – GERNOT ROHR URGES CALM AHEAD OF NIGERIA VS BENIN WORLD CUP QUALIFIER

Benin Republic coach Gernot Rohr has called for calm and sportsmanship ahead of his team’s decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Nigeria in Uyo on Tuesday.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference, the former Super Eagles coach reminded both nations that the encounter should be viewed as a football game, not a battle. Rohr emphasized the importance of maintaining friendship and mutual respect regardless of the outcome.

“It’s not a war, it’s a football game. Whatever will be the result, we will leave here and we will stay friends,” Rohr said. “Now the moment for us is to be ready, to be relaxed and to have a good game tomorrow.”

The stakes, however, remain high. Benin Republic only need a draw to seal their historic qualification for the 2026 World Cup in USA, Canada, and Mexico, while Nigeria must win by at least two goals to keep their hopes alive.

In the same Group C, South Africa will take on Rwanda in another crucial fixture that could determine who secures the top spot.

As the tension builds, Rohr’s message serves as a timely reminder that football should unite — not divide — nations, no matter how fierce the competition.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
