‘INSENSITIVE AND LACKING EMPATHY’ — LABOUR PARTY SLAMS TINUBU OVER EUROPE VACATION

The Labour Party has condemned President Bola Tinubu’s trip to Europe amid escalating insecurity across Nigeria.

Acting National Chairman Nenadi Usman described the holiday as insensitive and lacking empathy for Nigerians grappling with violent attacks and humanitarian crises. She stressed that the President should have remained in the country to oversee security operations.

“This is the most inauspicious time for the President to leave the country. Even the Christmas holiday in Lagos seems ill-timed, given that a bomb exploded in Zamfara today, killing nine people,” Usman said.

She added that Nigeria is facing external threats and accused the government of downplaying the severity of the situation.

The LP leader also criticized the President for not convening key security meetings following U.S.-led airstrikes on terrorist camps in Kwara and Sokoto States, highlighting a perceived lack of engagement with military leadership.

President Tinubu departed Lagos for Europe ahead of his scheduled official visit to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates for the Sustainability Week (ADSW 2026) Summit at the invitation of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The trip comes amid heightened security concerns nationwide.

Notably, the United States, on Christmas Day, authorized AFRICOM to conduct airstrikes on terrorist camps in Sokoto State, just hours before Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the operation. Meanwhile, a deadly bomb blast in Zamfara on Friday claimed several lives.
