INSECURITY: NSCDC WARNS AGAINST MISINFORMATION, FAKE VIDEOS
Civil Defence cautions public against circulating unverified security footage and false reports
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has issued a stern warning to members of the public against the creation and widespread sharing of misinformation, unverified reports, and fake security videos on social media platforms.
According to the command, the circulation of old or doctored footage concerning security incidents is deliberately designed to cause panic, heighten tension, and undermine the ongoing efforts of security agencies.
The warning follows a spike in misleading digital content purporting to depict current attacks or emergency situations, which security experts say distracts operational forces and disorients distressed families.
NSCDC authorities emphasized that spreading unverified information constitutes a criminal offense under extant cybercrime laws and urged citizens to verify the source of any security-related content before sharing.
The agency reassured the public of its unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property, appealing for active citizen collaboration by reporting genuine threats directly to security channels rather than spreading rumors online.
