INSECURITY FEARS: NLC SUSPENDS SOKOTO PROTEST, OPTS FOR PRAYER SESSIONS
The Sokoto State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called off its planned street protest over rising insecurity, opting instead to hold special prayer sessions for peace and safety across the state.
The decision was announced on Wednesday by the state NLC Chairman, Abdullahi Jungle, following consultations and a resolution by the State Executive Council, in line with guidance from the NLC national headquarters.
Jungle noted that insecurity continues to affect Sokoto and neighbouring states, with many local government areas still impacted. He explained that stakeholders agreed that organizing special prayers was more appropriate, reflecting the religious and cultural practices of the Sokoto people during crises.
The NLC, in collaboration with the Sokoto State Action Committee and other stakeholders, invited Islamic clerics to lead prayers for peace and security in the state.
The labour leader also urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts to tackle insecurity in Sokoto and neighbouring states, calling for adequate support for security agencies.
He emphasized that the suspension of the protest does not signal that labour has abandoned its demand for improved security, but rather demonstrates a peaceful approach to the current situation.
The special prayer sessions took place at the NLC secretariat, with participation from Islamic scholars, labour leaders, and community members.
