The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will remain central to the conduct of the 2027 general elections in Nigeria.

The electoral body made this known during discussions with the Director-General of the NYSC, noting that corps members have consistently played a critical role in ensuring smooth electoral processes across the country.

INEC explained that corps members are usually deployed as ad hoc staff during elections, where they serve in key roles such as polling unit officials, voting assistants and support personnel in election logistics.

According to the commission, their participation has helped strengthen transparency, reduce logistical challenges, and improve voter confidence in the electoral process.

The commission further emphasised the need for continued collaboration between INEC and the NYSC, especially in training and preparing corps members ahead of the next general elections.

It also stressed the importance of integrity, neutrality and professionalism among corps members who participate in election duties, warning against any form of compromise during the electoral process.

INEC assured that it would continue to improve training programmes and operational frameworks to ensure corps members are well-equipped for their responsibilities in the 2027 polls.

The meeting comes as preparations gradually begin ahead of the 2027 general elections, with stakeholders focusing on improving logistics, voter education and electoral credibility.
