INEC EXPLAINS REASONS BEHIND LOW VOTER REGISTRATION TURNOUT
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has attributed the low turnout in voter registration across the country to the long distances some residents must travel to reach INEC offices.
Speaking in an interview on Arise Television on Monday, INEC’s Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Victoria Etta-Messi, said the Commission is introducing a rotation policy to bring registration machines and teams closer to communities at the ward level.
“One major challenge we’ve observed is the distance of local government offices from many communities. This has discouraged citizens from traveling to register,” Etta-Messi explained.
She added that during the second phase of registration, scheduled from January 5 to April 17, the Commission will implement the rotation policy. “About 50 days before the end of the exercise, we will begin moving registration machines and teams from ward to ward, making the process more accessible to people at the local level. For now, registration continues at local government and state offices,” she said.
