Despite ongoing speculation about his possible removal, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, presided over a crucial meeting of the Commission on Thursday.

Reports had earlier suggested that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed Professor Yakubu to begin pre-retirement leave ahead of the expiration of his tenure later this year.

However, a statement issued by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, confirmed that Yakubu chaired the meeting, which reviewed preparations for the upcoming Anambra State Governorship election, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council election, and party primaries for the Ekiti and Osun Governorship elections.

The Commission also announced the approval of the 2025 promotion of 471 junior staff (Grade Levels 03–06), based on recommendations from the Appointment, Promotion and Disciplinary Committee (APDC) in line with staff conditions of service.

According to the statement, 515 staff were shortlisted for the exercise, out of which 214 qualified for elevation to Grade Level 07, 134 to Grade Level 06, 106 to Grade Level 05, and 17 to Grade Level 04.

“The promotion of junior staff concludes the first phase of the exercise. The next stage, which covers senior staff, has already commenced,” the statement read.

INEC further emphasized that staff promotion remains a routine and merit-based process, stressing its commitment to staff welfare and urging employees to remain dedicated to their duties, particularly in relation to elections and other electoral activities.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
