INDIA RISKS FRESH FIFA BAN OVER DELAYED FOOTBALL REFORMS

India could soon face another ban from world football, as FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) have warned the All India Football Federation (AIFF) to adopt a new football constitution by October 30, 2025 or risk suspension.

In a strongly worded joint letter to AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey, FIFA and the AFC expressed “profound concern” over India’s long-standing governance crisis. The new constitution has been pending in the Supreme Court since 2017, leaving Indian football stuck in limbo.

The two bodies made it clear: if the deadline is missed, FIFA’s decision-making committee will have no choice but to impose a ban. Such a suspension would prevent India’s national teams and clubs from taking part in any international competitions — a major setback for a country already struggling to stabilize its football ecosystem.

The crisis comes as the Indian Super League (ISL) — the nation’s top football league — faces uncertainty. The new season, usually running from September to April, has yet to begin due to disputes between the AIFF and its commercial partner, Football Sports Development Limited. Their contract expires on December 8, 2025, and no renewal deal has been announced. This deadlock has placed thousands of players, coaches, and staff at risk of losing their livelihoods.

India was last banned by FIFA in August 2022 over third-party interference, when the Supreme Court appointed a committee to oversee AIFF’s operations. That suspension was lifted within days, paving the way for Chaubey’s election as president.

Now, with another possible ban looming, global players’ union FIFPRO Asia/Oceania has voiced concern over player welfare and the long-term future of Indian football.

For fans, players, and clubs alike, the clock is ticking — and unless swift reforms are made, Indian football could once again be kicked out of the global game.
