IMO VARSITY FACES STAFFING GAPS AS ASUU QUESTIONS N50,000 MONTHLY PAY
The Academic Staff Union of Universities has raised concerns over alleged staff shortages and poor remuneration at Imo State University, Owerri. The union said the situation was affecting the working conditions of academic staff and could have implications for teaching and learning at the institution.
The Chairman of the ASUU chapter at the university, Prof. Christopher Anyanwu, reportedly disclosed the concerns while speaking on the condition of the institution. He said some workers were receiving as little as N50,000 monthly, describing the level of remuneration as inadequate given the economic realities facing workers.
The union also alleged that the university was operating with insufficient academic and non-academic staff. According to ASUU, the shortage has increased the workload of available workers and placed additional pressure on lecturers responsible for teaching, research and other academic responsibilities.
The development has raised concerns about the ability of the university to maintain effective academic standards while coping with increasing demands. ASUU called for greater attention to staffing and improved welfare for workers, stressing that adequate remuneration and sufficient personnel were necessary for the smooth running of the institution.
The union’s concerns come amid broader discussions about funding, staff welfare and working conditions in Nigeria’s public universities. ASUU has continued to advocate improved financing and better conditions of service across the university system, while stakeholders have urged governments and university authorities to address challenges affecting academic staff and students.
