The Imo State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its fight against crime with the detention of 25 suspects involved in armed robbery, terrorism, kidnapping, and other criminal activities.

The announcement was made by the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, in a statement issued in Owerri on Tuesday. The arrests are part of enhanced security measures implemented under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, AIG Aboki Danjuma.

According to the statement, the suspects were linked to crimes including murder, child trafficking, cultism, drug peddling, and the stealing and receiving of stolen property. Investigations revealed connections to proscribed groups, including the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

Among the ESN suspects are Eririogu Chukwuebuka, 28, of Njaba LGA; Ezemonye Orji, 32, of Ebonyi State; and Kelechi Michael, 28, of Owerri North LGA, along with three others. Some of the suspects are allegedly responsible for the 2021 murders of two traditional rulers in Njaba LGA.

During operations, police recovered four assault rifles, one AK-47, multiple firearms, 25 cartridges, 30 rounds of live ammunition, charms, two vehicles, three motorcycles, and about 1,200kg of marijuana. Additional arrests included two drug peddlers caught transporting 35 bags of marijuana and a notorious ESN member, Ezen Chinonso Ugochukwu, whose confession led to the dismantling of an ESN camp at Orsu Obodo.

DSP Okoye confirmed that all suspects and recovered exhibits are now in police custody for thorough investigations and proper arraignment. He emphasized the command’s determination to sustain operations against criminal networks and ensure public safety.

He also urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the police via 08034773600 to support proactive policing.
