IMMIGRATION WARNS NIGERIANS: DON’T MISUSE U.S. VISAS
Nigerian Immigration Cautions Citizens Against Misusing U.S. Visas
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a strong advisory to Nigerians, urging them to use their U.S. visas strictly according to the purpose stated during their application.
This warning comes after the U.S. Government raised concerns about the increasing number of Nigerians misusing visas — especially for reasons not declared when the visas were issued.
In a statement released on Saturday in Abuja, the Service Public Relations Officer (SPRO), Akinsola Akinlabi, emphasized that violating visa conditions can have serious consequences, including visa revocation, deportation, and even a permanent ban from entering the U.S. in the future.
“All visa holders must comply with the terms of their visa. The U.S. conducts strict screenings, and any breach of immigration laws can lead to severe penalties,” he said.
The NIS specifically advised Nigerian students studying in the U.S. to stay enrolled in their academic programmes and avoid absenteeism or unauthorized withdrawals, which could lead to visa cancellation.
In addition, the statement noted that U.S. consular officers can deny tourist visas to applicants suspected of intending to travel for childbirth — a practice known as “birth tourism” — in an attempt to secure U.S. citizenship for their children.
“We urge all Nigerians to respect U.S. visa rules. Responsible conduct is key to protecting legitimate travel opportunities for everyone,” Akinlabi added.
The Immigration Service reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the U.S. Mission to prevent Nigeria from being included in any future visa restrictions or travel bans.
For Nigerians hoping to study, work, or visit the U.S., the message is clear: follow the rules, or risk losing the privilege.
