The Nigeria Immigration Service has graduated 1,626 officers as part of efforts to strengthen migration management and improve the security of Nigeria’s borders. The graduation is expected to boost the manpower of the Service at a time when the country is dealing with increasingly complex migration issues, including irregular migration, human trafficking, migrant smuggling and other cross-border crimes.

The newly trained officers are expected to be deployed to different commands and formations of the NIS, where they will contribute to border control, migration monitoring and other immigration responsibilities. Their training was designed to equip them with the skills and knowledge required to carry out their duties effectively while maintaining professionalism and responding to emerging challenges in Nigeria’s migration environment.

The development is part of wider reforms being implemented by the NIS to modernise its operations and strengthen Nigeria’s border management system. The Service has been introducing technology-driven initiatives, including the e-Visa regime, Contactless Passport Application System, e-Border Solution infrastructure, Passport Personalisation Centre and the ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card, as it seeks to make migration management more efficient while improving national security.

The NIS has also placed greater emphasis on tackling crimes associated with migration, particularly human trafficking, migrant smuggling and irregular movement across Nigeria’s borders. The Service has maintained that stronger manpower, improved surveillance, technology and better cooperation with other security agencies are necessary to effectively monitor the country’s extensive borders and prevent criminal networks from exploiting migration routes.

The graduation of the 1,626 officers therefore represents another step in the government’s efforts to build a more capable and responsive immigration service. With the officers expected to strengthen operations at border points and other strategic locations, the NIS is looking to improve lawful migration management while ensuring that Nigeria’s borders remain secure against terrorism, trafficking, smuggling and other transnational crimes.
