IMF FORECASTS 4.7% GLOBAL INFLATION, 3% ECONOMIC GROWTH FOR 2026

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected a global inflation rate of 4.7% and economic growth of 3% for the current year, signalling a gradual but uneven recovery amid persistent challenges.

In its latest World Economic Outlook, the IMF noted that while inflation is trending downwards from previous peaks, it remains above target in many economies due to sticky core prices and geopolitical uncertainties. Advanced economies are expected to see faster disinflation, while emerging markets face more stubborn pressures.

On growth, the 3% projection reflects resilient consumer spending in some regions offset by high debt levels, trade tensions, and tighter financial conditions in others. The IMF highlighted risks including renewed commodity price shocks, policy uncertainty, and climate-related disruptions.

The report urged policymakers to maintain prudent monetary and fiscal stances while investing in structural reforms to boost productivity and resilience. For developing countries, it emphasised the importance of diversification and stronger institutions to attract investment.

Economists believe the outlook provides a cautious but realistic picture of the global economy as it navigates post-pandemic adjustments and new geopolitical realities.
