‘I’M NOT DESPERATE FOR INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION’ — OLAMIDE
Nigerian rap icon Olamide Adedeji, popularly known as Olamide, has stated that he is not desperate for international validation, emphasizing that staying true to his roots has always been the foundation of his success.
Speaking in a recent interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra, the Local Rapper crooner said that identifying his audience early in his career helped him build a loyal fan base and a lasting impact in the Nigerian music scene.
“You have to identify your audience. Once you identify your audience, the rest of the world will catch up eventually,” Olamide said. “So, I have to stay true to myself, no matter where it is or what it is. I have to stay true to myself.”
The YBNL Nation boss added that he feels no pressure to change his sound or style to appeal to Western audiences, stressing that authenticity is his strength.
“I’m comfortable in my skin. I’m a Naija guy, Yoruba boy — I have H-factor and all that, and I’m proud about it. You just have to stay true to yourself,” he added.
Olamide, who has played a major role in shaping Nigeria’s modern hip-hop culture, continues to inspire younger artists to embrace their identity and build globally relevant sounds without compromising their originality.
