‘I’M NOT AFRAID, I WON’T BE INTIMIDATED’ – OKINBALOYE REPLIES WIKE
Channels Television anchor Seun Okinbaloye has firmly stated that he is “not afraid” and will not be intimidated following controversial comments made by Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The tension began after Wike, during a media chat in Abuja on Friday, reacted sharply to remarks Okinbaloye made on a recent edition of Politics Today about the political landscape ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections. Wike was quoted saying that “if there was any way to break the screen, I would have shot him,” a remark that drew widespread condemnation.
Following the backlash, Wike’s media aide clarified that the comment was meant figuratively and was made in frustration over what the minister perceived as Okinbaloye stepping beyond journalistic neutrality. Officials stated that Wike did not intend to harm the journalist, and the two have communicated since the incident.
On Sunday, Okinbaloye addressed the controversy during a broadcast, thanking viewers, civil society groups, and both local and international organisations for their support. He said the solidarity he received “reinforces our collective commitment to truth and accountability.”
Okinbaloye also warned against the use of violent rhetoric in public discourse, stating that such language has no place in a democratic society and that suppressing dissenting voices could threaten democratic norms. “Our democracy is in danger if we allow one‑way traffic in balloting,” he said.
While Wike’s camp maintains the original remark was hyperbolic, several press freedom and civil society organisations have condemned the language used, demanding retractions and stronger protections for journalists.
Despite the controversy, Okinbaloye reiterated his commitment to journalism, saying he will continue to ask tough questions and hold public officials accountable as part of his professional duty.
