IKPEBA URGES SUPER EAGLES TO SEIZE PLAYOFF OPPORTUNITY FOR 2026 WORLD CUP QUALIFICATION
ormer Super Eagles striker, Victor Ikpeba, has urged Nigeria’s senior national team to seize their playoff opportunity and ensure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Super Eagles missed out on automatic qualification, despite thrashing Benin Republic 4–0 in their final group game last week. However, the result was enough to secure second place in Group C behind South Africa, granting them a place in the playoff stage.
Nigeria will now face the Panthers of Gabon in the semi-final playoff next month in Morocco. The winner of that tie will battle Cameroon or the Democratic Republic of Congo in the final for a spot at the World Cup.
Speaking on Monday Night Football on SuperSport TV, Ikpeba emphasized the importance of the moment, saying the Super Eagles must not waste this second chance.
“We can qualify for the World Cup; it is another chance for them to play at the World Cup,” Ikpeba said.
“They have a second lifeline — they have to grab it.”
The 1997 African Footballer of the Year also noted that Nigeria’s vast experience and depth of talent should give them the edge in the playoffs if they remain focused and organized.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will feature an expanded 48-team format — giving Africa nine direct slots and one playoff position.
