IKPEBA EXPLAINS WHY LOOKMAN STRUGGLED IN SUPER EAGLES’ 4-1 WIN OVER GABON
Former Super Eagles forward Victor Ikpeba has offered insights into Ademola Lookman’s underwhelming performance in Nigeria’s 4-1 victory over Gabon during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff semi-final in Rabat on Thursday.
Lookman, the reigning African Footballer of the Year, struggled to make an impact alongside Samuel Chukwueze in the team’s 4-4-2 formation. Both players were substituted around the hour mark, with Moses Simon replacing Lookman and Chidera Ejuke coming on for Chukwueze.
Speaking on SuperSport, Ikpeba attributed Lookman’s struggles to a lack of match fitness, explaining that the forward is still regaining form after missing the start of the season due to transfer issues.
“I would like to see more from Lookman; we have not seen the Lookman of old,” Ikpeba said. “We can understand, he’s short of match fitness, and that form is not there yet. The likes of Chukwueze and Lookman — we need to see more from these two players.”
Despite Lookman’s struggles, Nigeria managed to secure a convincing 4-1 win after extra time. Adams Akor opened the scoring for Nigeria, but Mario Lemina equalized for Gabon, forcing extra time. Victor Osimhen then scored twice, with a goal from Chidera Ejuke sealing the emphatic victory.
With this win, the Super Eagles have booked their place in the World Cup qualifying playoff final, where they will face DR Congo on Sunday. Fans will hope that Lookman and Chukwueze return to form in time for the crucial match.
