IKORODU RESIDENTS LAMENT PROLONGED BLACKOUT, FAULTY METERS AS FCCPC INTERVENES
Residents of Ikorodu, Lagos State, have expressed frustration over prolonged power outages and faulty electricity meters, prompting the intervention of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).
The residents said persistent electricity challenges had disrupted household activities, affected small businesses and increased their living costs, with many forced to rely on generators and alternative power sources.
For traders, artisans and other small business owners, the outages have created additional operating expenses, particularly for those who depend on electricity to preserve goods, operate equipment and serve customers.
The FCCPC’s intervention is aimed at addressing consumer complaints and improving accountability among electricity distribution companies. The commission has consistently urged power providers to resolve complaints involving unreliable supply, inaccurate billing, faulty meters and wrongful disconnections.
Residents affected by prolonged outages and metering problems are seeking lasting solutions rather than temporary assurances, stressing that electricity customers should receive services that reflect the charges imposed on them.
Faulty meters and disputed bills have also raised concerns about transparency in electricity billing, with consumers calling for prompt repairs, replacements and proper investigation of unexplained charges.
The commission has urged electricity distribution companies to strengthen their complaint-resolution mechanisms and ensure that customers can obtain timely assistance when problems arise.
It has also emphasised the importance of compliance with consumer protection regulations, particularly those governing billing practices, disconnections and the resolution of disputes between electricity providers and their customers.
The situation in Ikorodu highlights wider concerns about electricity distribution in Lagos, where households and businesses continue to face challenges linked to inconsistent supply and the cost of alternative energy.
Residents are hopeful that the FCCPC’s intervention will lead to improved service delivery, faster resolution of metering complaints and greater accountability from the relevant electricity providers.
