IKEJA CLUB ROLLS OUT DIAMOND JUBILEE EVENTS, REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO CIVIC GROWTH

In a bid to reflect on six decades of civic impact and chart a path for sustained urban development, Ikeja Club has officially flagged off activities marking its 60th anniversary celebration.

Addressing newsmen at a press briefing held at the club’s premises, the President of Ikeja Club, Aare Musediq Adeleke, described the diamond jubilee as both a celebration of an enduring legacy and a moment for strategic reflection on the role of social institutions in shaping society.

Tracing the evolution of the institution, Adeleke recalled that the club was conceived in 1966 by a core group of three visionary founders, who subsequently invited nine others to hold a maiden meeting at the historic Victoria Hotel in Ikeja.

“Sixty years ago, a group of visionary gentlemen came together with a noble idea to establish a club that would promote friendship, integrity, service, fellowship and community development,” Adeleke said. “From that modest beginning, Ikeja Club has grown into one of the most respected urban clubs in Lagos State and indeed in Nigeria.”

He noted that the anniversary, themed “Urban Club and City Development,” was deliberately chosen to highlight how traditional recreational spaces can actively contribute to governance, civic engagement and social infrastructure.

According to the president, the line-up of anniversary events will span medical outreaches, charitable donations, thanksgiving services, competitive sporting events and a public lecture, culminating in a grand finale designed to bring together members and stakeholders across the country.

Elaborating on the club’s current standing, the Vice President of Ikeja Club and Chairman of the 60th Anniversary Planning Committee, Mr. Abayomi Akin Omoyinmi, revealed that the organization has expanded its membership base to over 2,000 elite professionals, including foreign nationals.

Omoyinmi underscored the club’s historical contributions to national sports, pointing out its role as a key training ground and pipeline for international tennis talent in Nigeria.

“We preach fellowship and unity,” Omoyinmi stated. “It is a channel for almost all international tennis players in Nigeria. Recreation is paramount and we remain dedicated to promoting indoor and outdoor sports, including swimming, table tennis and lawn tennis.”

Management assured the public and media partners that the institution would remain steadfast in upholding its founding tenets of excellence, responsible citizenship and community service as it steps into its next decade.
