IGP PROPOSES 200% GRATUITY AND ENHANCED PENSIONS FOR RETIRED POLICE OFFICERS
Police chief submits overhaul plan to presidential committee to address longstanding retirement welfare grievances and ongoing agitation over Contributory Pension Scheme
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has proposed a 200 per cent gratuity package alongside enhanced monthly pensions for retired police officers in a major bid to resolve systemic retirement welfare challenges within the Nigeria Police Force.
The proposal was submitted to a dedicated presidential committee constituted to review police pension structures, address accumulated liabilities, and streamline administrative bottlenecks. Under the proposed framework, eligible officers could receive a severance gratuity equivalent to 200 per cent of their final annual emoluments upon retirement, while securing monthly pensions directly linked to their last earned salaries.
Disu noted that the enhanced package is designed to address widespread agitation among personnel seeking an exit from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), while ensuring retroactive financial relief for existing retirees through periodic pension reviews. The police chief emphasized that President Bola Tinubu’s intervention in the police pension crisis has raised expectations for a sustainable resolution that guarantees financial dignity for officers after active service.
The police high command clarified that the 200 per cent gratuity remains subject to ongoing deliberations by the multi-agency committee, which includes representatives from the Federal Ministry of Finance, National Pension Commission (PenCom), and the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, before final approval and operational guidelines are issued by the Federal Government.
