IGP ORDERS NATIONWIDE CLAMPDOWN ON VEHICLES WITHOUT NUMBER PLATES
The Inspector-General of Police has ordered a nationwide enforcement operation targeting vehicles operating without number plates, as part of renewed efforts to curb crime and improve road safety across Nigeria.
According to the directive, police commands across all states have been instructed to intensify surveillance on highways, urban roads, and checkpoints to identify and impound vehicles without proper registration. The operation also covers vehicles with fake, altered, or improperly displayed plates.
The police said the move is aimed at tackling the increasing use of unregistered vehicles by criminal elements to evade detection during investigations and security operations. Authorities added that proper vehicle identification remains a key tool in combating kidnapping, armed robbery, and other violent crimes.
Motorists found violating the directive are expected to face arrest, prosecution, and possible vehicle seizure in line with existing traffic and criminal laws. The police also warned against attempts to obstruct enforcement officers carrying out their duties.
The Force Public Relations Office urged members of the public to comply fully with vehicle registration requirements and ensure their number plates are clearly visible at all times. It also encouraged citizens to report suspicious vehicles to security agencies.
The nationwide operation is expected to run continuously, with police authorities stressing that the goal is to strengthen public safety and restore order on the roads.
