IGP DISBURSES ₦2.3BN INSURANCE BENEFITS TO FAMILIES OF FALLEN POLICE OFFICERS

Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has presented insurance cheques worth ₦2.3 billion to families and beneficiaries of police officers who lost their lives while serving the country.

The payment, which covered 2,971 beneficiaries, was described as part of efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to honour its fallen personnel and provide financial support to the families they left behind. Disu said the Force would continue to recognise the sacrifices made by officers who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.

The Inspector-General stressed that the families of deceased officers should not be left to struggle alone after losing their loved ones in service. He assured the beneficiaries that the police leadership remained committed to supporting them and ensuring that the sacrifices of their relatives were not forgotten.

The presentation of the insurance benefits represents one of the measures being used by the police authorities to strengthen the welfare system for personnel and their dependants. For families who lose their principal breadwinner while serving in the Force, such financial assistance can provide support during a difficult period.

Disu also reiterated that the Nigeria Police Force would continue to prioritise the welfare of its personnel, including officers who are injured or killed while carrying out their responsibilities. He emphasised the importance of ensuring that officers have confidence that their families will receive appropriate assistance should tragedy occur in the course of their service.

The IGP's position reflects the broader need for stronger welfare mechanisms within Nigeria's security institutions, particularly for families of officers who die while confronting violent crime, terrorism, kidnapping and other security threats.

The beneficiaries of the latest disbursement include families and dependants of officers covered under the applicable insurance arrangements. The presentation was therefore not only a financial intervention but also a recognition of the service rendered by the deceased officers.

Disu assured the families that the police administration would not abandon them following the loss of their relatives. He described the fallen officers as heroes who made significant sacrifices in the protection of lives and property across the country.

The Inspector-General further called for continued support for serving police personnel, noting that the effectiveness of officers on the frontline is closely connected to the welfare and security assurances available to them and their families.

The latest disbursement comes amid continued calls for improved welfare, insurance coverage and compensation for Nigeria's security personnel. Support for the families of fallen officers remains an important component of maintaining morale among serving personnel who operate in increasingly challenging security environments.

The Nigeria Police Force said it would continue working to strengthen its welfare programmes and ensure that eligible beneficiaries receive benefits due to them under existing insurance arrangements.
