IFO LG BOSS FAULTS LAGOS OVER SIGNPOST AT DISPUTED OGUN BOUNDARY
The Chairman of Ifo Local Government Area in Ogun State has criticised the Lagos State Government over the erection of a signpost at a disputed boundary, raising fresh concerns about the long-running disagreement over territorial jurisdiction between the two states.
The council chairman expressed concern that the placement of the signpost could create confusion among residents and undermine efforts to resolve the boundary dispute peacefully. He maintained that the affected area falls within Ogun State’s jurisdiction and called on Lagos authorities to respect established administrative boundaries.
The dispute reflects broader tensions over boundary demarcation between neighbouring communities in Ogun and Lagos, where rapid urbanisation, population growth and expanding infrastructure have complicated questions of territorial administration.
Residents in disputed areas can face uncertainty over which state or local government is responsible for providing public services, collecting levies, maintaining roads and enforcing development regulations.
The Ifo council chairman urged the relevant authorities to pursue dialogue and consult appropriate government agencies responsible for surveying and boundary demarcation. He said disputes of this nature should be addressed through established legal and administrative procedures rather than actions that could heighten tensions between communities.
He also called for greater cooperation between both state governments to prevent misunderstandings and ensure that residents are not caught in the middle of political or administrative disagreements.
Boundary disputes can have implications for land ownership, planning approvals, taxation and the delivery of public infrastructure. Stakeholders have therefore emphasised the need for accurate documentation and transparent processes in resolving such matters.
The chairman maintained that peaceful engagement remained the best way to settle the disagreement and urged both governments to prioritise the interests of affected residents.
The latest development highlights the need for sustained cooperation between Lagos and Ogun states as urban expansion continues to bring neighbouring communities closer together.
