[ICYMI] AFCON 2025: SUPER EAGLES CRUISE PAST MOZAMBIQUE TO REACH QUARTER-FINALS
The Super Eagles of Nigeria have powered into the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after an emphatic 4–0 win over Mozambique in their Round of 16 encounter in Fès.
Nigeria picked up right where they left off in the group stage, extending their perfect run after winning all three Group C matches. From the opening whistle, the Eagles looked sharper, faster, and more organised, leaving Mozambique struggling to contain their attacking intensity.
The breakthrough came in the 20th minute when Ademola Lookman calmly finished off a well-worked move, converting an assist from Akor Adams. Just five minutes later, Victor Osimhen doubled Nigeria’s lead with a clinical strike, putting the Eagles firmly in control before the break.
Any hopes of a Mozambique comeback were dashed early in the second half. Barely two minutes after the restart, Lookman turned provider once again, setting up Osimhen for his second goal of the night to make it 3–0. Akor Adams then capped off a dominant performance with Nigeria’s fourth goal in the 75th minute, sealing a convincing victory.
In midfield, captain Wilfred Ndidi led by example alongside Frank Onyeka and Alex Iwobi, dictating the tempo of the game. At the back, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, and Bruno Onyemaechi formed a solid defensive line, ensuring Mozambique never truly threatened. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali enjoyed a quiet night, as Mozambique failed to register a shot on target.
Head coach Éric Chelle used the second half to rotate his squad, bringing on Paul Onuachu, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, Tom Dele-Bashir, and Raphael Onyedika to keep the team fresh.
By the 80th minute, Nigeria had recorded eight shots on target, underlining their dominance and attacking depth.
With the victory, the Super Eagles march confidently into the quarter-finals, keeping their dream of a fourth AFCON title alive. They will next face the threat of the clash between Algeria and DR Congo as the tournament heats up.
