“I WAS BEATEN ON SET FOR SUPPORTING BABA SUWE” – VETERAN ACTOR YOMI KING (OPEBE) RECOUNTS SHOCKING EXPERIENCE
Veteran Yoruba comic actor Yomi King, popularly known as Opebe, has revealed a shocking incident from his career, claiming he was physically beaten on a movie set for supporting his late friend and colleague, Baba Suwe, during an old feud in the Yoruba film industry.
Speaking in a recent interview on Behind the Fame, Opebe recounted how the incident occurred while filming the movie Eku Meji, where a scripted fight scene turned real due to lingering tension among cast members.
According to him, the problem started when Baba Suwe and actor Yinka Quadri had a misunderstanding, and Opebe decided to take Baba Suwe’s side. This choice later had painful consequences.
“Those sufferings were beyond acting; they were real beatings. That’s what they call acting, you have to do it well and real for people to know it truly happened,” Opebe explained.
He went on to describe how the supposed movie fight became a genuine assault.
“When we got to the set, and it was a beating role… when he replied me, it was a slap and a severe beating. I began to shout, ‘Cut! This isn’t a movie anymore.’ I was angry,” he added.
Opebe, who started his acting career in 1979 and gained fame through the TV series Erinkeke, remains one of Nollywood’s beloved comic figures. He was also known for his long-standing friendship and collaborations with the late Baba Suwe, with whom he shared countless memorable on-screen moments.
