“I CRY WHENEVER I HEAR OF KILLINGS” — SENATE PRESIDENT AKPABIO VOWS RENEWED PUSH FOR PEACE IN PLATEAU
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed deep sorrow over the persistent violence in Plateau State and other parts of Nigeria, saying he is personally affected each time he hears of killings anywhere in the country.
Akpabio spoke on Saturday at the Jos Polo Field during a reception organized by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for new political defectors. He emphasized that the federal government is committed to restoring peace and unity, but lasting stability must come from within Nigeria—not from outsiders.
Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the event, the Senate President said the administration is determined to tackle insecurity head-on.
“We are calling on God Almighty to help us at the centre to bring peace to Plateau,” he said. “Anybody that will rule Plateau must be committed to peace. This is the only party that cares for you. I am here on behalf of the President to assure you we will do everything possible to ensure peace returns.”
He stressed that peace must be a collective effort:
“It is not people outside that will come and give you peace. It is we that must bring peace. We must live in peace with one another. Nigeria must have peace for progress to come.”
Akpabio spoke emotionally about the human cost of the violence, noting that each report of bloodshed weighs heavily on him.
“I cry whenever I hear the killing of a human being, whether a child or an adult,” he said. “This problem did not start today; many people have died in Plateau. Nigeria is crying out. A lot of blood has been shed, and we are not happy.”
The Senate President recalled that the crisis escalated significantly in 2010, referencing security reports dating back to his time as a governor. He acknowledged the heavy toll of killings, displacement, and destruction in several communities over the years.
Akpabio vowed that both he and the Tinubu administration remain fully committed to intensifying efforts to restore stability—both in Plateau State and across the country.
He urged residents to continue supporting President Tinubu and the APC, assuring them that meaningful progress will follow as peace gradually returns.
