The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project has awarded scholarship grants to 500 Ogoni graduates pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees.

The beneficiaries include 300 master’s students and 200 PhD students drawn from communities across Ogoniland.

Speaking during the presentation on Thursday, HYPREP Project Coordinator, Professor Nenibarini Zabbey, urged the recipients to use their research to address problems facing their communities.

He said the support formed part of the project’s alternative livelihood programme and its investment in the skills needed to shape Ogoniland’s future.

Zabbey encouraged beneficiaries to look beyond their individual academic achievements and contribute ideas, knowledge and leadership to the region’s development.

The initiative builds on an earlier scholarship scheme that supported 300 Ogoni postgraduate students.

Speaking on behalf of the scholars, the convener of the Ogoni Postgraduate Forum, Bariatonlo Ken Nnaane, thanked HYPREP for fulfilling its commitment and pledged that recipients would put the grants to good use.

He also called for stronger collaboration between HYPREP and Ogoni researchers, alongside additional support from other organisations to ease the financial burden of postgraduate research.
