HURIWA COMMENDS DSS DIRECTOR-GENERAL FOR SECURITY AND INTELLIGENCE REFORMS

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria has commended the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Adeola Ajayi, for what it described as improved professionalism, intelligence-led operations and reforms within the security agency.

HURIWA said the changes under Ajayi's leadership had contributed to a more intelligence-driven approach to national security, while also improving the agency's engagement with issues relating to human rights and accountability.

The organisation particularly praised the DSS for strengthening intelligence operations aimed at tackling terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other threats to national security.

HURIWA also highlighted what it described as a shift towards preventive security measures, arguing that intelligence gathering and early intervention were crucial to stopping security threats before they escalate into major attacks.

The rights group said professionalism within security institutions was important not only for protecting citizens but also for building public confidence in government agencies responsible for national security.

It further urged the DSS leadership to continue strengthening reforms that promote accountability, professionalism and respect for fundamental rights in the course of security operations.

HURIWA's position reflects its broader call for security agencies to combine effective intelligence gathering with rights-based practices, including stronger mechanisms for receiving complaints, addressing alleged misconduct and engaging communities.

The organisation maintained that institutionalising such reforms would help ensure that improvements within the DSS remain sustainable and are not dependent solely on the leadership of the current Director-General.

HURIWA also encouraged greater collaboration between security agencies, civil society organisations and communities, saying credible intelligence from citizens can complement the work of professional security operatives.

The group said continued reforms within the DSS could strengthen Nigeria's internal security architecture while ensuring that the protection of citizens' rights remains an important part of the country's security strategy.
