HOW COBHAMS HELPED ME RISE TO STARDOM – OMAWUMI OPENS UP
Award-winning Nigerian singer, Omawumi Megbele, has shared how ace producer and singer Cobhams Asuquo played a major role in shaping her music career and setting her on the path to stardom.
Speaking during an interview on Hip TV, the Bottom Belle crooner revealed that her first collaboration with Cobhams turned out to be a career-defining moment, even though she didn’t expect it at the time.
“The first time we met, he just called. I knew we met on the show, and he said, ‘Omawumi, this is Cobhams Asuquo—you know he likes to funkify his name. There is a song I want you to do. It might not come out as anything for now, but let’s just go with it,’” she recalled.
Omawumi explained that she agreed to record the song without realizing its potential significance for her career.
“I did the song, and then the agency picked it. I became the brand ambassador for that product for two years. Cobhams taught me a lot of nuances when it comes to delivery and posture,” she added.
The singer, who shot to fame as the runner-up of Idols West Africa in 2007, praised Cobhams for believing in her talent early on and helping her refine her artistry.
According to her, their collaboration opened several doors — including endorsement deals and future music projects — that helped establish her as one of Nigeria’s leading female vocalists.
Cobhams Asuquo, who has worked with top acts like Asa, Timi Dakolo, Waje, and Banky W, is credited with producing several of Omawumi’s hit tracks and remains one of the most respected figures in the Nigerian music industry.
