Tragedy struck in Gombe State as a police officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Clement Yunana, was killed in a hit-and-run incident on Wednesday evening.

The Gombe State Police Command confirmed the sad news in a statement released on Friday by its spokesperson, DSP Buhari Abdullahi.

ASP Yunana, who was attached to the Railway Police Outstation in Bajoga Division, was reportedly hit by an unknown vehicle around 5:00 p.m. while attempting to cross the road near Matrix Filling Station in Tumfure, Akko Local Government Area.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle, which was coming from the Bauchi Road axis toward Gombe metropolis, struck the officer and sped off without stopping to help. Yunana sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, where he was later confirmed dead.

The police have since launched a full investigation to trace and identify the driver responsible for the accident.

The Gombe State Police Command is also appealing to members of the public to provide any useful information that could assist in the case.

Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Yahaya, extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late officer, describing the incident as a painful loss to the force.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
