HEDA CALLS FOR TRANSPARENCY OVER LAGOS LAND RECLAMATION FOR COASTAL HIGHWAY PROJECT

The Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA Resource Centre) has called for full disclosure and transparency regarding land reclamation activities linked to the Lagos Coastal Highway project.

The group said there is a need for government agencies and contractors involved in the project to provide detailed information on the scope, environmental impact, and approvals obtained for reclamation works being carried out along the coastal corridor.

According to HEDA, large-scale reclamation projects have significant environmental and social implications, including potential effects on marine ecosystems, coastal communities, and urban development patterns.

The organisation stressed that transparency is essential to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and to safeguard public interest in major infrastructure developments.

HEDA also urged relevant authorities to publish environmental impact assessment reports and clarify the legal framework guiding the reclamation and construction activities associated with the highway project.

Environmental advocates note that coastal development projects require strict monitoring to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability, particularly in densely populated coastal cities like Lagos.

The group further called for stronger public engagement and accountability mechanisms to ensure that affected communities are adequately informed and involved in decision-making processes.
