HEALTH INSURANCE ENROLMENT SURGES 35% TO 22 MILLION ENROLLEES

Nigeria’s health insurance enrolment has recorded a remarkable 35% increase, reaching 22 million beneficiaries, according to the latest data from the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).

The significant jump reflects growing awareness, expanded state-level schemes, and government efforts to improve access to quality healthcare through various contributory programmes. Officials attributed the rise to intensified sensitisation campaigns, inclusion of vulnerable groups, and the introduction of innovative digital enrolment platforms.

Experts described the development as a positive step towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC), though they noted that millions of Nigerians remain uncovered. The NHIA expressed commitment to further expanding coverage through stronger public-private partnerships and increased funding for the vulnerable group fund.

Stakeholders called for sustained investment and policy support to address existing gaps, particularly in rural areas where enrolment rates are still low. The surge in enrolment is expected to reduce out-of-pocket healthcare expenses and improve overall health outcomes for millions of citizens.

The development comes as the government continues to prioritise healthcare financing reforms to build a more resilient and inclusive system.
