HAALAND BECOMES FASTEST PLAYER TO HIT 50 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE GOALS
Erling Haaland has written his name into the Champions League history books after becoming the fastest player ever to reach 50 goals in the competition.
The Norwegian striker achieved the milestone in just 49 matches, surpassing Ruud van Nistelrooy’s long-standing record of 62 games. Haaland reached the landmark with a towering header in Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Napoli at the Etihad Stadium.
In the 56th minute, Phil Foden lofted a delicate pass into the box, and Haaland rose highest to nod the ball into the corner, giving Pep Guardiola’s men the lead. Just ten minutes later, Jeremy Doku doubled the advantage with a brilliant solo run and finish past Vanja Milinkovic-Savic.
Napoli’s hopes had already been dented in the first half when captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo was sent off for a last-man foul on Haaland, forcing manager Antonio Conte into a tactical reshuffle.
The night also saw the emotional return of Kevin De Bruyne to his former club. The Belgian, who rejoined City on a free transfer this summer, was greeted with a rousing ovation from home fans as he both entered and exited the pitch.
City created several chances before eventually breaking through, with Tijjani Reijnders and Rodri testing Milinkovic-Savic, while Josko Gvardiol went close with a curling effort before halftime.
In the end, it was Haaland’s record-breaking goal and Doku’s dazzling strike that secured all three points, giving City the perfect start to their European campaign.
Up next, Guardiola’s side turn their focus to the Premier League showdown against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, a clash that could have major implications in the title race.
