It was yet another tragic day for residents of the Gwon community in the Rim District of Riyom Local Government Area, Plateau State, as gunmen suspected to be Fulani militia struck again, killing two Christian preachers on Sunday, July 13.

According to Solomon Dalyop, National President of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYMA), the victims were members of an evangelism team who had just finished preaching in the area when armed men emerged from nearby rocks and opened fire, killing them on the spot. The attackers then stormed the village, shooting indiscriminately and forcing terrified residents to flee for safety.

Dalyop condemned the attack in strong terms, calling on the government and security agencies to act urgently to protect lives in Riyom, which he noted has suffered repeated assaults over the years. He expressed frustration over what he described as a porous security situation that continues to embolden armed groups.

Narrating the ordeal, Dalyop said the attackers took advantage of the poor security presence to carry out their deadly mission. He also revealed that while the community gathered later that day to bury the two slain preachers, gunmen struck again in the neighbouring Bachit community, shooting another man dead.

"While we were burying the two people killed in Gwon, the militia went to Rim and attacked the village, firing shots for nearly an hour and destroying crops in Jol community," Dalyop recounted.

He added that residents are living in fear and mourning, uncertain of what might happen next as heavily armed attackers—estimated to number over a hundred—continue to roam the area unchecked.

The BYMA leader urged the government to step up efforts to secure Plateau communities and prevent further loss of innocent lives.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
