GUNMEN KILL TWO POLICEMEN, INJURE ANOTHER IN RIVERS STATE ATTACK
Gunmen have killed two policemen and injured another in a fresh attack in Rivers State, highlighting the persistent security challenges in the oil-rich region.
The incident occurred when armed assailants ambushed a police team in the area. The two officers were killed on the spot while a third sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment in hospital.
According to police sources, the officers were on duty when the gunmen opened fire on their team. The attackers escaped immediately after the assault. The Rivers State Police Command has condemned the attack and vowed to track down those responsible.
This latest killing of security personnel adds to a troubling pattern of targeted attacks on law enforcement officers in Rivers State. The state has long struggled with cultism, militancy, kidnapping, and politically motivated violence. Attacks on police not only reduce the number of active officers but also have a demoralising effect on the force and can embolden criminals.
Such incidents often strain relations between communities and security agencies while undermining public confidence in the authorities’ ability to maintain law and order. They also divert police resources toward internal protection rather than proactive crime prevention.
