GUNMEN KILL KOGI APC CHAIRMAN, ABDUCT PASSENGER ALONG EXPRESSWAY
The Kogi State Police Command has commenced an investigation into an armed attack along the Itobe–Ochadamu Expressway in Ofu Local Government Area, which resulted in the death of an APC ward chairman and the abduction of another person.
The victim, identified as Ishaq Yunusa, was the divisional APC chairman in Dekina Local Government Area. He was reportedly travelling along the highway when armed assailants emerged from the surrounding bush and opened fire on motorists.
The attack occurred around Ojuwo Olijo at about 5pm on Thursday, according to the police. A blue Toyota Corolla was later discovered abandoned along the road, with Yunusa found dead inside the vehicle.
Another occupant of the car was reportedly seized by the attackers and taken into the surrounding bush, prompting security agencies to launch a search operation.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Afusat, said security operatives were already combing the forest in an effort to rescue the abducted victim and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
The body of the deceased was subsequently evacuated to Grimard Hospital in Anyigba, where it is expected to undergo an autopsy as part of investigations into the incident.
Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, Naziru Kankarofi, has ordered sustained security operations along the affected route and directed officers to intensify efforts to track down the perpetrators.
The latest attack has raised fresh concerns about the safety of motorists and residents using the Itobe–Ochadamu corridor, particularly following reports of criminal activities and abductions along parts of the route.
The police have urged motorists and residents in the area to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to security agencies.
Security operatives are expected to continue searching the surrounding forests while investigations proceed into the circumstances of the attack and the whereabouts of the abducted passenger.
