GUNMEN KILL 14, INCLUDING WOMEN AND BABIES, AFTER PLATEAU MARKET TRIP
At least 14 people, including women and babies, have been killed in another deadly attack in Plateau State. The victims were returning from the popular Bokkos weekly market on Thursday, July 24, 2025, when suspected Fulani bandits ambushed their vehicle along Chirang Road in Mangor District.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers were heavily armed and opened fire on the unsuspecting passengers without warning, leaving several others injured in the process. The victims had just concluded their day at the market and were heading back home when tragedy struck.
A resident who witnessed the aftermath said, “It was a horrifying scene. The gunmen blocked the road, opened fire, and left many dead on the spot.”
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of the Bokkos Cultural Development Forum (BCDF), Farmasum Fuddang, expressed deep sorrow and outrage. In a statement issued Friday, he lamented that despite ongoing peace talks between farming and herding communities in the area, the violence has continued.
“The victims were innocent people, including women and children, who had gone to the market. This attack is proof that the peace efforts haven’t stopped the bloodshed,” Fuddang said.
He directly accused Fulani militias of being behind the attack, alleging that their aim is to forcefully take over land in Bokkos, which is widely known as Nigeria’s potato capital.
The fresh attack has heightened fear and tension in the area, as residents question the effectiveness of the peace and security arrangements in place.
Authorities are yet to issue an official police report on the incident as of the time of this report, but calls for urgent government action are growing louder.
