GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS HAILS RONALDO AFTER PORTUGAL RETIREMENT
Cristiano Ronaldo has been honoured by Guinness World Records following his retirement from international football after 23 years with Portugal.
The organisation highlighted his reported totals of 234 appearances and 146 goals, recognising both as records in men’s international football.
Ronaldo, 41, announced his decision in a social media video on Thursday, saying it was time to pass Portugal’s number seven shirt to the next generation.
“For 23 years I had the privilege and responsibility of wearing it, defending it and carrying it with me into stadiums all around the world,” he said.
The forward admitted that stepping away had been difficult, describing it as a decision involving both thought and emotion.
Ronaldo made his senior international debut in August 2003. He captained Portugal to their first major trophy at Euro 2016 and helped secure UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.
The announcement followed uncertainty about his future after he left the national team camp in September amid reports of a disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus.
Ronaldo had subsequently said he remained available for selection when fit.
His final international appearance came in Portugal’s 1–0 Nations League victory over Wales on September 24, according to the report.
Although his Portugal career has ended, he is expected to continue playing club football with Al-Nassr.
