GTCO INTEREST INCOME SURGES 506% AS DOLLAR LIMIT DOUBLES
Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc recorded a 506 per cent increase in interest income as the limit on certain dollar-denominated transactions doubled, boosting earnings from its financial operations.
The sharp rise in interest income reflects the impact of increased foreign currency activity and higher earnings from interest-generating assets.
The development highlights the growing contribution of foreign exchange-related and dollar-linked transactions to the financial performance of Nigerian banks.
GTCO has continued to strengthen its balance sheet and expand its financial services as the banking sector adapts to changes in Nigeria’s monetary and foreign exchange environment.
Analysts said increased dollar transaction limits could create additional opportunities for banks to generate income from foreign currency-related services and financing.
They noted that banks with strong digital platforms and foreign exchange capabilities could benefit from higher transaction volumes as businesses and individuals engage more actively with dollar-denominated services.
The increase in interest income also comes amid broader changes in the banking sector, including recapitalisation efforts aimed at strengthening financial institutions and supporting economic growth.
Analysts, however, said banks would need to maintain strong risk management practices as foreign exchange exposure and market volatility increase.
GTCO said it remained focused on strengthening its operations, improving customer services, and expanding opportunities across its banking and financial services businesses.
The latest performance highlights the increasing role of foreign currency-related activities in the earnings of Nigerian financial institutions amid ongoing reforms in the banking and foreign exchange markets.
