GROUP URGES SENATE TO DECLARE SHEHU BUBA’S SEAT VACANT OVER PRP DEFECTION

A political group known as Concerned APC Youths Bauchi South, has petitioned the Senate President and the APC National Chairman to declare the seat of the senator representing Bauchi south, Shehu Buba, vacant, following his defection to the People’s Redemption Party (PRP).

In a press release by the chairman of the group, Aminu Garba, the youth group said the petition was submitted on 2nd July, 2026 and was acknowledged by both the Office of the President of the Senate and the APC National Secretariat.

According to him, their demand is in line with the Section 68(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which provides for vacation of seat by a lawmaker who defects from the party that sponsored his election.

Aminu said the action became necessary after “the Senator’s public defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC), the political party under whose platform he was elected, to the People’s Redemption Party (PRP).”

“We firmly believe that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria remains supreme and must be respected by every elected public office holder irrespective of political status or influence” the statement reads.

The youths argued that the mandate Senator Buba currently holds was given under the APC platform adding that any voluntary abandonment of that platform must be subjected to the provisions of the constitution.

They called on the President of the Senate, the National Assembly, the APC National Working Committee, INEC and other relevant authorities “to urgently consider and act on our petition in accordance with the Constitution and the rule of law.”

However, the Concerned APC Youths also issued a 14-day ultimatum to the authorities to act warning that failure to act within the period would force them to seek other legal options.
